Apparently Victor Stenger doesn’t get it

Over on Friendly Atheist, they reviewed this guy’s book and he didn’t like what they had to say about his neglect of blogs. His responses: More…

Pope Moron XIV

Oh yeah, I’m ad homineming. I don’t even care. Why? Because I’m sick of Pope Benedict XIV spewing dangerous nonsense like this:

Is it not true that inconsiderate use of creation begins where God is marginalized or also where his existence is denied? If the human creature’s relationship with the Creator weakens, matter is reduced to egoistic possession, man becomes the “final authority,” and the objective of existence is reduced to a feverish race to possess the most possible.

New Atheism – A pejorative for the 21st century

We upstart atheists are making the religious fundamentalists very very nervous. Most rational religious people acknowledge our existence and right to exist with equal privileges. However the loudest and most obnoxious religious people find it quite uncomfortable that atheists are no longer content to sit quietly in their oppression by a religion-normative society. To address this spunky band of rebels, they’ve come up with a catchy name: the New Atheists. More…

Growing up Catholic

My family is Catholic. They aren’t very religious, but that’s what they put on government forms. We didn’t attend church regularly. We went to holiday mass (such as Christmas and Easter) when I was a child and up to the age of 14 I was forced (I use this word intentionally) to go to Catechism. My mother prays to St. Anthony when she loses something, but otherwise I’m not aware of her praying. In later years (as recently as 2 years ago) my father claimed to be an atheist, but throughout my life he did not intervene when I was trying to get my mother to understand that I was an atheist. As recently as this past summer, my mother told me that she thinks an atheist worships the devil.

This is how I grew up. More…

Discussion – How moderate Christians can help atheism.

I’d just like to highlight a really great discussion that’s going on across several blogs. More…

CreoZerg – Atheist Student Alliance field trip

Follow #creozerg on Twitter for the Secular Student Alliance visit to the Creation Nauseum Museum.

Have fun, everyone, and stay safe.

UPDATE: Apparently AiG is “onto” them and is praying for their very souls. Incidentally, it’s always “funny” to me when they perceive our right to free speech as an attack on their right to free speech. Really they can say what they want, as long as it’s within the law and doesn’t infringe on other’s liberties. If evangelist Christians want to be seen as decent human beings by atheists, they could start by throwing away the bigotry and standing alongside us to fight for our mutual rights. We don’t “oppose anyone who believes in god”. We oppose anyone who would use that belief to bully and silence us. If they honestly don’t see the difference in those two things, then maybe a civil relationship really is impossible.

UPDATE: I present the “What will happen without god” (via @antangil) section without further comment.

We have to be careful when we’re talking about crimes committed because of alleged demons, gods, fairies, etc. More…
