Choice

There have been many kerfuffles of a similar category lately: Blizzard’s ridiculous RealID system, Facebook’s automatic/forced opt-in to whatever intrusive social “feature” they’re promoting that month, bloatware on cellphones, and Pepsigate (to name a few off the top of my head).

What do all of these have in common? Consumer choice was ignored.

When will companies learn that we would not get nearly so pissed of about unwanted and potentially unnecessary extra “features” in their products were we only given the choice of whether or not to participate?

I know I’m probably going to get made fun of, but I don’t care. I liked Star Trek: Voyager completely sans irony. It’s nowhere near my favorite of all the Star Treks — that honour is reserved for TNG — and had its faults, but Voyager definitely also had some shining moments.
