UPDATE – Baby Hitler

Remember those two brilliant individuals who named their kids after white supremacists? Well they lost their kids to child protective services (well the US equivalent anyway). However, I’m not sure that in the eyes of the law a name will constitute abuse or negligence so they may not be removed for long. However, it appears their home has racist paraphernalia so who knows. I’ll update if I hear anything else.

UPDATE: See Skepchick‘s take.

  1. Removed for bad names? For hateful paraphernalia?

There is a little part of me that just started chanting “slippery slope”.

  2. Yeah, I’m not sure why that would constitute a reason for hauling kids out of their home unless it’s considered a form of neglect (like a failure to educate maybe). These things can happen when there’s a public outcry though because there can be an influx of “tips” after they’re in the news and it’s the mandate of child protective services to take all claims seriously. I don’t expect the kids will be out of the home for long unless they find some better evidence that the kids were being harmed in some way or can prove in court that what was happening was in fact harm in the eyes of the law.

  3. Since Social Services can’t comment on why the children were taken out of the parents’ custody, the sobering realization is that there may have been actual abuse.

On the other hand, if they are just overreacting due to the news story, then that is a pretty sad state of affairs indeed. For better or for worse, stupidity alone is not grounds for child abuse.

  4. Agreed – there is not enough information yet.

But, I don’t think that it’s a waste of time. If social services gets enough reports that a child is being abused or neglected, they have to take it seriously and investigate. I wouldn’t call that an overreaction, it’s just their standard reaction. Although there is stigma involved with being investigated by social services, and although I don’t think they necessarily go about it in the best way, I’d rather people be pissed because there was nothing going on than their kid continue being abused/neglected.

In Canada in particular where we provide socialized services, I think we need to come up with a more secure and relatively private way of protecting children and educating people about the purpose of these investigations to reduce stigma.

  5. So it turns out that Social Services may not have had any grounds to remove the kids…sketchy. I think this might get messy before it gets better.
