You were in many a textbook

See the story of HM at the link. The gist is that this man had his hippocampus (among other things) removed secondary to a seizure disorder and could no longer form new memories. His retrograde memory was intact. I discussed him in many classes — his participation in neurological research was instrumental to scientific progress in studying human memory.

Thank you, HM, and goodbye.

  1. Wow, what an amazing, yet unfortunate, story! It’s a good thing he was such a patient and understanding person to allow so many people to study him.
